Cheyenne police have identified the man who tried to steal an ATM from the Sinclair on Vandehei Avenue on Aug. 4 as Jacob Blatchford of Tucson, Arizona.

Officer Kevin Malatesta says Blatchford, 37, stole a truck, trailer and excavator from different locations in Laramie County.

He then used the excavator to break through the outer glass at the gas station and attempted to rip the ATM out of the floor.

Blatchford, who had his dog with him, fled when the alarm sounded.

Malatesta says Blatchford was arrested on Aug. 13 in Pima County, Arizona for sexually assaulting a petting zoo pony and burglary.

"We were able to (track him down) using some different evidence that was left at the scene," said Malatesta. "The dog is pretty much a dead giveaway if you look at the side-by-side comparison of the dog he was arrested with in Arizona."

Malatesta says police have yet to file charging documents in the case.

Blatchford is currently being held in the Pima County jail on a $50,000 cash bond and will likely be extradited to Laramie County once the crimes he's accused of in Arizona are adjudicated.
