Current and former members of the military were on hand Friday for an Armed Forces Day ceremony at the state capitol in Cheyenne. Governor Matt Mead signed a proclamation in honor of Armed Forces day.

The first Armed Forces Day was celebrated on Saturday, May 20, 1950. The theme for that day was “Teamed for Defense”, which expressed the unification of all military forces under one government department. According to the U.S. Department of Defense, the day was designed to expand public understanding of what type of job was performed and the role of the military in civilian life.

Wyoming's Adjutant General Maj. Gen. Luke Reiner said the men and women of the Wyoming National Guard really appreciate the support of the community, the state and the nation. He said it is special to take time to recognize those who are serving or who have served their country.

Armed Forces Day displays will bw at the mall on Saturday May 18th from 10 a.m- 4 p.m.
