According to the Laramie County School District #1 director of transportation, Merle Smith, many drivers throughout the city still continue to illegally pass school buses.

Of the 126 school buses in LCSD1, only 17 do not have the installation of external camera's, which were added via a state law to take video of any automobiles illegally passing buses in school zones and at regular stops.

However, people still continue to pass these buses illegally, thus endangering children boarding and disembarking from the bus.

Drivers should know that when a bus is stopped, with red lights flashing and the stop sign swung out on the drivers side, they are to stop and not pass the bus. Unfortunately, drivers still continue to pass buses even though the sighs are out.

The law was enacted in 2011, by the Joint Education Interim Committee because of an 11-year old girl, who was struck and killed after getting off of a bus in Wyoming.

According to Smith, the Cheyenne Police Department and LCSD1 need to do a better job in siting these law breakers for the safety and life of our children in the county.
