Cheyenne Firefighters, City Miss Contract Deadline

CHEYENNE, Wyo. (AP) — The city of Cheyenne and its firefighters have failed to meet a state deadline for a new contract and talks have stalled pending a vote from the city council.

The Wyoming Tribune Eagle reported Tuesday that the union wants councilors to take an official vote stating who their representatives on the negotiating team are. The union says that’s required by state law.

State law also requires contract agreements to be reached within 30 days of starting negotiations. Since that hasn’t happened, both sides are also preparing to go to mediation even as they work out the technicalities about the negotiating team.

Mayor Rick Kaysen said that regular negotiations can still continue despite the arbitration preparations.

Firefighters want raises but some city officials are reluctant because other city workers aren’t expected to get them.
