Cheyenne Expert: Most Child Safety Seats Are Misused
A Child Car Seat Checkup is scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 24 at the Kohl's Department Store parking lot in Cheyenne.
The event is slated to run from 10 a.m. until 1 p.m. and is sponsored by Safe Kids Wyoming in partnership with Kohl's Department Store.
Wyoming law requires kids under the age of nine to be in a child restraint in the back seat of the vehicle. The lack of such seats in use is a primary offense, which means motorists can be stopped and ticketed for that alone.
Safe Kids Wyoming Director Stephanie Heitsch says studies show 89-92 percent of the seats in Wyoming are either installed incorrectly or are being used improperly. That reduces their effectiveness and means kids aren't as well-protected as they should be.
Child Safety Seat experts will be on hand at the event to make sure the seats are installed and being used properly.
