Casper police on Friday arrested a man for allegedly picking his children up from school while intoxicated.

Joseph D. McAdams, 47, was booked into jail on recommended charges of DWUI with child endangerment, child endangerment and no insurance. He will likely make his initial appearance in Natrona County Circuit Court at 2 p.m. Monday.

Charging papers say at about 2:30 p.m. Friday, a police officer was sent out to a Casper school after someone reported McAdams was drunk when he picked his child up from the school.

About an hour prior, McAdams had been at a different school and was also reported to police after picking up another one of his children while intoxicated. Both people who reported McAdams to police said he smelled strongly of alcohol, and one of them reported McAdams had bloodshot eyes and stumbled on his way out of the building.

The officer found McAdams' vehicle in a parking lot, and watched as McAdams got out of the driver's seat.

When the officer introduced herself, McAdams immediately said he had not been driving. The officer, court documents say, smelled the strong odor of an alcoholic beverage on McAdams' breath, and noticed that he had bloodshot eyes as well as slurred speech.

The officer asked McAdams why he had been sitting in his vehicle with his two children; he reportedly said he was waiting on the children's mother.

The hood of the vehicle was still "significantly warm," the officer noted.

A review of McAdams' driving record, as detailed in court documents, contains multiple alcohol-related violations.

McAdams allegedly told the officer he had been drinking earlier "at happy hour," charging papers say. He allegedly claimed to have consumed two "screwdrivers" at 10 a.m., but later said he had been drinking from 10 a.m. to 10:30 a.m.

McAdams repeatedly claimed he had not been driving, but said no one else picked the children up from school and they had not driven home on their own.

The children reportedly told the officer that McAdams had picked them up from school. One of the children said McAdams smelled like alcohol.

McAdams refused to participate in standard field sobriety tests, saying he didn't need to because he had not been driving. The officer arrested him for DWUI.

The officer searched McAdams, asking if he had anything in his pockets that was going to stab, poke or stick the officer. McAdams allegedly replied, "My d---."

The officer then put McAdams into the rear of her patrol vehicle.

The children were taken into protective custody and released to the Wyoming Department of Family Services.

Two breath samples taken from McAdams at the Natrona County Detention Center reportedly showed his blood alcohol concentration to be .160 and .159, respectively -- roughly twice the legal limit.
