Homeowner's insurance is something that all homeowner's must have. But did you know that there are many things that are not covered by insurance companies?  Recently Yahoo! Finance came out with a list of uncommon exclusions from homeowner insurance policies. Be aware of these unexpected items not covered in your policy. Here are 5 things that people may think are covered, that basically are not.

  1. Sewer Back-Up - When my basement had a bit of a back up with sewage, I was told to see if my insurance would cover the expenses. To avoid any surprises, it has been recommended that you buy an inexpensive rider to add to your policy. In my case, there wasn't really enough to claim, so I didn't.
  2. Mold - Here's a big one that might surprise you. Mold was covered, but after some of the damage done in the state of Florida, more and more insurance companies are not covering the removal and restoration of property affected by mold.
  3. Expensive Jewelry - If you have a considerable amount of expensive jewelry, talk with your insurance carrier to ensure that this is covered under the normal homeowner's policy. If not, then you'll want to purchase an additional rider to cover the loss, should you be a victim of theft.
  4. Trampolines - Injuries can occur as you or your little lovelies are hoping around on the family trampoline. However, if an injury happens, don't expect your homeowner's insurance to foot the bill.
  5. Dog Bites - This may be an unexpected surprise when your little "Mikey" decides he wants to wax bold and bite someone. Most, if not all, homeowner's insurance carriers will not cover the bite.

Some of the big issues are still covered like fire and flooding. Please keep in mind that these are some highlights of what insurance companies are not covering. Always check with your insurance about coverage, as each insurance company differs a bit from the rest.
