We can think of our childhood memories and reminisce about the days of erector sets and Lincoln Logs and how we were in control of the creativity. Now, there are Smartphones.  As with anything in life, there are good things and bad things about pretty much anything and everything...to a degree. When it comes to kids and Smartphones, one must wonder if the over cash out is a good ideas.

Here are 5 reasons why it may not be a good idea to hand your growing and developing child a Smartphone.

  1. They'll Want Their Own - That's all you need is to have your 7 year old wanting their own Smartphone. They will be able to access many things that you may not approve of. If you need to get them a phone for safety, I might suggest getting them a pay-as-you-go phone. After all, it's for safety and not for entertainment.....right?
  2. The Drop Factor - These phones are pretty expensive nowadays. Younger kids have a hard enough time hanging onto an ice cream cone without dumping it, let alone your $500 Smartphone.
  3. Dependency - If you're child is dependent on you, well, that's one thing. The last thing you need is your youngster being dependent on a Smartphone device for 5 and 6 hours a day. This behavior is not good for anyone, especially young children who are still developing attention skills and what not.
  4. Sleep Disruption - Many parents have found that too much screen time has challenged their child's actual sleep time. Very difficult to get them to sleep after many hours viewing a moving screen.
  5. Creativity Limitations - Kids need to be playing with Legos, Lincoln Logs, or coloring in coloring books. All these activities, and many others, help to bring out a child's creativity, rather than stifle it.
