Most of the time, when people think of Memorial Day, they think of camping, picnics, beer and barbeque. But what should we be really thinking about on this day?  Sometimes it's good to stop ourselves and think about what we're doing, or supposed to be doing, on these holidays that we as Americans hold dear to our heart.

Today on the Top 5 at 7:45, I'll highlight ways that you and your family can do, to show that you truly are remembering the fallen sons and daughters of American's in wartime.

  1. Memorial Service at Beth El Cemetery on Pershing Blvd - The annual Memorial Day wreath-laying ceremony kicks off at 11 a.m. Post 1881 of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and Post 6 American Legion Post will sponsor the event in the Beth El Cemetery on Pershing Blvd.
  2. St. Mark's Episcopal Church - Members will observe Memorial Day by reading the names of the fallen who participated in Operation Enduring Freedom and Operation Iraqi Freedom. The church is located at 1908 Central Ave in Cheyenne.
  3. Fly the Flag - Properly display the American Flag from sunrise until 12 noon on Memorial Day as this day is considered a "National Day of Mourning."
  4. Flowers on Graves - Take your family through the local cemetery and lay flowers and flags on the graves of our fallen soldiers. Most graves will show service dates or tell that they served. Also, your local Am Vets should be able to help you with this.
  5. Make A Pledge - Pledge to go to the Cheyenne VAMC and visit sick and disabled veterans in the hospital. You can also get involved with groups the help those who have been left behind by a deceased veteran.

There are many things that you can do to observe Memorial Day. Some towns hold parades and churches hold services to remember our fallen sons and daughters who gave their life, that yours and mine might be free.

The Top 5 at 7:45 airs weekdays with me, Gary Freeman and sponsored by First Education Federal Credit Union. Have a safe Memorial Day Weekend.
