Attention, teachers and others. Earth Science Week is coming up in October and the Wyoming State Geological Survey (WSGS) is again offering free toolkits to junior high science classrooms across the state for the event. 50 toolkits are available on a first come, first serve basis, provided by the American Geosciences Institute (AGI).

The 2018 Earth Science Week will be October 14th-20th, and the theme is “Earth as Inspiration,” which AGI says "emphasizes artistic expressions as a unique, powerful opportunity for geoscience education and understanding in the 21st century."

The WSGS helps facilitate the learning in Wyoming by offering a number of resources to science teachers for classroom use. "Most kids have a natural interest and enthusiasm for earth science topics," says WSGS Director, Dr. Erin Campbell. "These Earth Science Week toolkits are a great resource for teachers to keep that interest alive."

Each toolkit contains material to help prepare for Earth Science Week and teach earth sciences throughout the year, including posters and calendars, NASA Materials, water footprint calculators, website and GPS resources, and a host of other materials. You can request one by contacting Christina George at christina.george@wyo.gov or (307) 766-2286 ext. 231.

The WSGS and University of Wyoming Geological Museum are also teaming up to kick off Earth Science Week with a special event,  "Wyoming ROCKS! The Art of our Geology". That will be Saturday, October 13th, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the museum. That's free and open to the public.

AGI has organized Earth Science Week in October since 1998. In 2012, Wyoming Governor Matt Mead proclaimed the second week in October as Wyoming Earth Science Week. More Information about Earth Science Week, including links to activities and learning resources, can be found on the WSGS education webpage and on the AGI website.
