The Cowboy State has a new top dog. After finishing in a dead heat with defending champion Billy "No Belly" Floyd, Casper resident Johnny "Kamikaze" Haase won an eat-off to claim the 2019 Wyoming Hot Dog Eating Championship yesterday at the Mills Town Hall.

Haase and Floyd both consumed 11 hot dogs during the event, so organizers settled the tie with an overtime round, which Hasse won to claim the championship. K2TV Weekend Sports Anchor Kiera Grogan ate six hot dogs to take the women's title.

"I have to applaud Billy 'No Belly' for being a gracious and challenging champion," Haase posted on Facebook. "He put up a good fight but I came prepared to walk away with the 2019 Championship belt. It's an experience that I shan't forget."

Several years ago, Haase competed in a shrimp eating contest in Texas and lost. This time, he watched a YouTube video to help prepare him for the challenge. Unfortunately, nothing could prepare him for the "hot dog hangover" he experienced after the event.

"Hot dog sweats are even worse than the meat sweats," Haase joked.

Now in its second year, the event was hosted by the Casper-based food truck Rockin Burgers N Dogs. Along with the Hot Dog Eating Championship, the event included the Pop In The Shop Car Show, which drew over 40 classic cars and hot rods, live music, and a fruit-bobbing contest.

"We had a great turn out for spectators," Rockin Burgers N Dogs owner Ticker Lock said. "A huge thank you to all the vendors and guests that suffered thru the blazing heat. Also a big thank you to the Mills Fire Dept for being there."

Haase says he will be back to defend his title in 2020.
