An ordinance to decriminalize marijuana within the city of Cheyenne failed to pass a second reading on a 6 to 3 vote during Monday night's City Council meeting.

Cheyenne Mayor Patrick Collins believes the bias crimes ordinance he publicly signed earlier this month will be the "most important" legislation he signs during his term in office.

After a year of meeting via Zoom, the Cheyenne City Council will resume in-person meetings at the municipal building starting Monday, April 12.

The defeat on first reading on Dec. 1 posed a problem because the city ordinance would then be out of sync with state law.

Vice Mayor Ray Pacheco proposed postponing the vote until the regular council meeting on Feb. 16.

Local governments can craft local ordinances to make state laws more strict, but not less strict.
