Residents of communities across Wyoming are reporting a phone scam in which the caller claims to be a firefighter raising money for a burn center.

The calls have been originating from a number starting with (307) 886. When recipients of the calls try to call the number back they get a recorded message saying the number has been disconnected.

So far the calls have been reported in Cheyenne, Casper, Laramie, Rock Springs, Sheridan and Afton.

In some cases, the caller claims to be raising money for for a burn center in Afton, in other cases the fictitious burn center is located in the community in which the potential victim lives.

Similarly the caller sometimes claims to be with the Afton Fire Department, but in others claims to be affiliated with a local fire agency.

Officer Dan Long with the Cheyenne Police Department reminds people that they can always verify such calls by calling the fire department the caller claims to be affiliated with.

He also reminds people that it's never a good idea to give out personal financial or credit card information unless you are absolutely certain you are dealing with a legitimate organization.
