77 years ago today, one of the most famous couples in the world were married in Wyoming.

November 21, 1940, literary legend Ernest Hemingway and writer Martha Gellhorn tied the knot at the Laramie County Courthouse, then celebrated their nuptials with a dinner at the Cheyenne Depot. The reception was later depicted in the 2012 HBO movie “Hemingway and Gellhorn”.

At the time, it was Hemingway's third marriage. His second wife had been granted a divorce in Florida only two weeks earlier. Hemingway and Gellhorn divorced four years later in 1945.

The iconic author was no stranger to Wyoming. He once said, “there are two places I love; Africa and Wyoming.” In 1946, Hemingway returned to the Cowboy State with his fourth wife, who suffered a miscarriage and nearly died at the Natrona County Hospital in Casper.

Over the years, several celebrity weddings have been held in Cheyenne. March 7, 1876, legendary wild west gunslinger ‘Wild’ Bill Hickok and Agnes Thatcher Lake were married at a private residence. August 31, 1973, actor Steve McQueen married actress Ali MacGraw in Holliday Park.
