Not long ago, Cheyenne welcomed the NCAR - Wyoming Supercomputing Center. But what are some of the things that they do that benefit us here in Wyoming?  A few of the unique things that the NCAR (National Center for Atmospheric Research) Supercomputing Center does is help to predict potential earthquakes, engineer more efficient wind power and protect our water supplies.

NCAR is also able to carry out many different tasks at different times with a technique called parallel processing. Whether we know it or not, parallelism is a part of our daily lives. A multilane highway will get more cars down the road much faster than a single-lane road.

The NCAR works much the same way. It is one of the fastest computers in the whole world. This is needed if you're going to be able to effectively research the earths system. With their supercomputing, coupled with the idea of parallelism, they are able to amass the number-crunching ability needed in order to model the Earth system.

If you get a chance to stop by the NCAR-Wyoming Supercomputing Center, do so. They offer tours to their visitor center Weekdays from 8 am - 5 pm and Saturdays from 10 am to 4 pm. They are closed Sundays and holidays.
