The Laramie Police Report for 2024 shows sex crimes more than doubled, but some other crimes were down, with big decreases in some categories.

That's according to the Laramie Police Department's report for 2024, which was posted on Saturday on the LPD Facebook page.

Overall the report shows decreases in 4 of 7 specific categories. Besides sex crimes, increases were seen in drug crimes and burglaries. Decreases were seen in theft, simple assault, aggravated assault and weapons offenses.

Laramie's Small Population Can Lead To Big Percentage Fluctuations

It's worth noting that as is the case in most Wyoming communities, Laramie's relatively small population means small variations in raw numbers can lead to big statistical swings.

For example, Laramie Police report they dealt with only two weapons offenses in 2024 compared to 8 in 2023. That resulted in a whopping 75 percent decrease, despite the fact that it was only a total difference of 6 cases, or one every two months.

The report also specifies that "the Wyoming Division of Criminal Investigation has not yet released the 2024 data. As a result, the crime statistics presented, including theft crimes, sex crimes, simple and aggravated assaults, burglary/breaking and entering, and drug and weapons offenses—have been compiled from LPD’s LARC Division records."

So What Does The Report Show?

Sexual crimes saw an increase of 119 percent, from 21 in 2023 to 46 in 2024.

Guided by respect, integrity, teamwork, and stewardship, we strive to serve with purpose and integrity in all that we do. We believe in the strength of collaboration and the importance of open communication. Your voice matters.
