Laramie County Commissioner: WCCA Supports Guns At Meetings
While a bill that would have allowed people to carry concealed weapons into government meetings in Wyoming didn't make it through the 2016 session of the Wyoming Legislature, Laramie County Commissioner Linda Heath says she doesn't have a problem with the idea.
Heath goes on to say she isn't only speaking for herself on the issue. She says the Wyoming County Commissioners Association [WCCA] also backed the proposal. Heath says the WCCA "backs the Second Amendment," adding many county commissions across the state already allow people to openly carry firearms into their meetings.
While Heath may support the proposal, that opinion isn't unanimous among Laramie County elected officials.
Cheyenne Mayor Rick Kaysen has been a vocal opponent of the idea over the last several years, saying '"I don't see why anyone has to carry a gun into a public meeting."
The mayor, who says he is a strong supporter of the Second Amendment, supported the Wyoming Association of Municipalities [WAM] in asking legislators to amend the proposal to allow local governments to opt out of allowing weapons at government meetings.
But in the end the proposal died because it missed a deadline to be reported out of committee in the state senate. It passed the state house on a vote of 50-10.
