Cheyenne Mayor Rick Kaysen says the possibility the Cheyenne Airport will lose $850, 000 in federal funding "is a concern".

The airport stands to lose the money because fewer than 10, 000 people boarded planes in Cheyenne last year, below the threshold for a Federal Aviation Administration subsidy.

The city is asking the agency for a waiver, but Kaysen says if it isn't granted it could have an impact on efforts to improve the runway and other features at the airport.

Kaysen admits many people are used to using Denver International Airport rather than the local facility, adding there  "has 'been a great effort" to encourage people to use the Cheyenne Airport.

The mayor says he thinks one reason people continue to fly out of DIA is due to scheduling, adding he would like to see that addressed in Cheyenne.

Plane fares are also generally cheaper for those flying out of Denver s well, although that doesn't factor in such expenses as the cost of driving or car storage.
