It's alleged that on Friday, Jan. 2, in Laramie County, Morton "intentionally recklessly inflicted upon H.M., a child under the age of 18, physical injury."

Initial Court Appearance

On Friday, Jan. 9, Morton was seen in Circuit Court in front of Judge Sean C. Chambers on the charge.

Morton told Chambers she was confused about whether or not she was eligible for a public defender.

"I don't have a job at this point, but I don't think that it's fair that my husband would have to pay for this," said Morton. "My husband is leaving me; it just isn't official yet."

"I am staying with mom right now in Greeley, Colorado," she added.

Chambers went ahead and appointed Morton a public defender and set her preliminary hearing for Friday, Jan. 16, at 10:30 a.m.

Chambers then asked for the state's bond recommendation.

"Obviously, your honor, the state has some concerns about this case," the state said. "I've reviewed the probable cause remarks, and it is troubling to say the least, especially given Ms. Morton's recitation that she plans to leave the state."

"I think that a cash bond would be appropriate," the state added. "I have not a receipt of a federal criminal history, but given the nature of this crime, the state believes that something in the neighborhood of $7,500 cash would be appropriate."

Bond Set at $7,500 Cash

"I'm going to set a $7,500 cash only bond," Chambers told Morton. "If you're able to post that, I'll set conditions. Otherwise, we'll see you next Friday."

Please remember that all defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty.
