FAKE NEWS: Predicting This Wyoming Winter

WYDOT (Wyoming Department of Transportation) just threw up a winter forecast on social media based on the Farmer's Almanac.

The Old Farmer's Almanac winter 2026–2027 forecast predicts a mostly mild winter for much of the United States, alongside colder and snowier conditions in specific corridors influenced by a strengthening El Niño.

For the state of Wyoming, the Almanac shows the southwestern half of the Cowboy State being mild and snowy, while the northeastern half of the state is forecasted to be mild and dry.

SO - should we listen to the old Almanac?

WELLLLLL - Farmer's Almanac is only about 50% to 52% accurate. That's like a coin toss. It's like asking, is it going to snow on a certain day and then flipping a coin to find out.

By the way, that is much lower than the 80% to 85% accuracy rate that the publishers of the Almanac claim.

Let's also remember that last winter's forecast was completely wrong. Not just the one given by the Farmers' Almanac but also from the National Weather Service here in the USA and other predictions from around the globe.

Humans have come a long way with modern technology when it comes to observing weather. But we still don't understand most of it. Making a prediction that far out is like trying to predict elections or winning lottery numbers.

So while it might be fun to listen to what the forecasters have to say, don't take any of it seriously. I'm sorry to say that we are just going to have to wait to see what happens, like we do every year.
