Recently, a study was done to find out which states had the cleanest, and which states and the dirtiest hospitals.

If you live with me here in Wyoming, then right away you want to know where the Cowboy State ranked.

I'll get right to it and tell you - Wyoming ranked the 9th cleanest out of 50 states.

I bet you are dying to know (no pun intended) who was the filthiest.

To figure out the rankings, three simple measures of cleanliness (reported infections, inspection write-ups, and patient feedback).

According to the research, Delaware is the worst and Utah is the best. Keep in mind that these results are just a snapshot and reflect these states overall, not hospital by hospital. Your experience may vary.

Rankings from dirtiest to cleanest, let's look at states around Wyoming.

1 being the dirtiest, 50 being the cleanest.

Montana was 7th.
Colorado ranked 24th.
South Dakota was 34th.
Nebraska was a very clean 48th.
Utah was the cleanest at 50th.

Not looking so good, Montana. What's wrong up there?

Disclaimer
This study summarizes publicly available data analyzed by Nursa and is for general information only. Rankings compare states and do not certify individual hospitals as safe or unsafe.

No study is perfect, so let's examine how this one was conducted.

The study looked at clinical results (infections), oversight language (inspections), and what patients see and smell (surveys). Inspection uses keywords like “dirty,” “odor,” or “contaminated,” which can over- or under-capture real problems. Patient surveys vary in response rates. Some reporting is voluntary, so keep that last one in mind.
