If you've ever been to one of Wyoming's petroglyph sites, you know that the state's history is somewhat odd.

Everyone has their interpretation of the artwork that decorates cliffs and mountainsides all over the state.

I've visited Castle Gardens between Casper and Shoshoni and Legend Rock between Thermopolis and Meteetsee. Walking the well-worn path, you can feel the energy in the air. It's almost like you're teleported back in time and are just discovering the strange markings.

Undoubtedly, the artist was in a "special" place when this artwork was created at these two locations, but they may not be the strangest in Wyoming.

I've yet to explore the White Mountain Petroglyphs in Sweetwater County, but they're definitely on my list.

According to the Bureau of Land Management (BLM), about 12,000 people visit the site annually, which is much lower than the number of people who stroll through the gates at Yellowstone, Devil's Tower, or Grand Teton National Park.

I've watched videos of the White Mountain petroglyphs, and even through video, they give me a different vibe. Seeing giant claw marks and eerie crevices with odd carvings freaks me out, thinking about how they were created.

Was it man, was it beast, was it from this earth? All questions that enter my mind. There have been reports of alien encounters of the third kind here, so why wouldn't the people of Wyoming's past have encountered the same?

If you've never been to White Mountain and are looking for an adventure, check out these videos to get the gist of the appeal.
