Wyoming Safety Wyett Ekeler Receives Another NFL Tryout

LARAMIE -- The Denver Broncos want another look.

After inviting former Wyoming safety Wyett Ekeler to rookie minicamp in May, the team is again giving the Colorado native a shot at his NFL dream with an additional tryout this week, according to the Denver Post.

The younger brother of Washington running back Austin Ekeler, the three-year starter in Laramie is coming off an injury-plagued senior campaign that saw the Windsor product register just 46 tackles, 31 less than the previous season.

Ekeler suffered not one, but two broken thumbs, both coming in a Week-3 meeting with rival BYU.

Despite sporting large casts on both hands throughout the season, Ekeler did manage to snag an interception against San Jose State and tally eight tackles the following week against Utah State.

"I think you can sum up the locker room a little bit with Wyett Ekeler, right? You know, he goes out and plays with two broken thumbs," Wyoming head coach Jay Sawvel said last October. "Look, there's a lot of guys at a lot of places and at this point in the year, with the record that we have, would have just said, 'No, I'm good. I'll start training for whatever's next.'

"That's not the case here."

Ekeler capped his Wyoming career with 197 total tackles, including 127 solo stops. The 5-foot-11, 210-pounder also picked off four passes, returning one for a touchdown in 2023 during a lopsided road victory over Nevada. He also finished with two sacks and the same number of forced fumbles during his junior season.

The Cowboys' all-time leading scorer, placekicker John Hoyland, also received a minicamp invite this spring. He turned that into a roster spot, signing a 3-year, $2.965 million dollar deal with the Baltimore Ravens.

Hoyland is the 13th former Cowboy currently on an NFL roster, joining Josh Allen (Buffalo), Logan Wilson (Cincinnati), Carl Granderson (New Orleans), Treyton Welch (New Orleans), Xazavian Valladay (New Orleans), Chad Muma (Jacksonville), Andrew Wingard (Jacksonville), Marcus Epps (New England), Frank Crum (Denver), Tyler Hall (Seattle), Solomon Byrd (Houston) and Isaiah Neyor (San Francisco).
