LAS VEGAS, Nev., --  After leading the Cowboys in both scoring and assists in the regular season, guard Obi Agbim was named the Mountain West’s Newcomer of the Year on Tuesday the league announced as voted on by head coaches and member of media covering the conference.

He also earned Third-Team All-MW honors and becomes the first Cowboy since Uche Nsonwu-Amadi in 2000-01 to be named MW Newcomer of the Year.

Agbim a native of Aurora, Colo., is in his first season with the Cowboys. He ranks fourth in the conference in scoring at 17.8 points per game. He has scored 20 or more points 10 times this season. He is also one of the top three-pointer shooters in the nation at 44.4 percent to lead the conference and rank ninth in the nation.

The guard has hit three or more triples in 15 games this season. He has made 79 for the season, which ranks ninth in single-season school history. His 2.8 threes per game ranks second in the conference.

He has scored in double-figures in all, but one game played this season. Agbim also leads the team in assists at 3.5 per game. with 4.6 per game in conference play. That number ranks No. 12 in the conference.

He recorded one double-double in conference play with a career-high 10 assists at Utah State.

The Cowboys open the Credit Union 1 Mountain West Men’s Basketball Championship on Wednesday against San Jose State at Noon on the Mountain West Network and MW App.
