Over 200 NFL players refused to stand at attention during the playing of the national anthem this past weekend, choosing to kneel instead.

That total included 32 members of the Denver Broncos.

The action came after President Trump said he would like to see players who refused to stand at attention during the anthem fired. His comments provoked a firestorm of controversy, with NFL commissioner Roger Goodell saying the comments showed a lack of respect for the NFL and NBA superstar LeBron James calling the president "a bum."

Meanwhile, overall attendance at NFL games and tv ratings are down. Many attribute the declines at least in part, to the anthem controversy.  While a handful of players were kneeling prior to the president's comments last week, the controversy has exploded over the last few days.

Supporters of the action say they are a way to call attention to racial injustice and police brutality against African-Americans. Opponents say it's disrespectful to the nation and especially to military veterans who have put their lives on the line for this country.
