Decathletes headline day one of the MW Championships
CLOVIS, Calif. — The University of Wyoming Track & Field teams took to Veterans Memorial Stadium for Day one of the 2021 Mountain West Championships on Thursday evening. First on tap for the Championships was the first half of the Decathlon and the men’s and women’s 10,000 meter race.
In the Decathlon, Cowboys Sage Coventry and Bryson Engebretsen sit in fifth and eighth place, respectively, after the first day of competition with day two on schedule for tomorrow at 10AM (PDT) starting with the 100M Hurdles.
With 3607 points Coventry is in fifth place with his best performance on day one coming in the High Jump.
The Cowboy freshman finished tied for first with a mark of 6-5.5 while teammate Engebretsen sits in eighth place with 3324 points. Engebretsen posted his best finish with a fourth-place effort in the Long Jump with a mark of 21-11.
The lone solo event on the first day was the 10,000 meters for the men and women. The men were up first as Cowboys Christopher Henry and Jerald Taylor took to the track. Henry ran a 30:15.89 to finish in 9th and Taylor did not finish. Addi Iken was the lone Cowgirl in the women’s race. Iken posted a 37:16.97 to finish in 15th place.
Field events will get started at 3PM with the women’s Hammer Throw and will end with the men’s Shot Put tentatively scheduled for 8PM while the Cowboys and Cowgirls will get started on the Track with the men’s 1500M at 6PM.
Track events will run through 9:30PM with the women’s Steeplechase slated to finish day two off.
