The Cheyenne Police Department will officially commission two new “K9 Officers” to duty this week.

This Thursday, two new police dogs will join the patrol team and officially hit the streets of Cheyenne with their handlers. “Capo” and “Ruger” have both successfully completed a rigorous nine week training course followed by another week of intense state certification testing. Both K-9s and their handlers passed all of the testing requirements and are fit for duty with the Cheyenne Police Department.

K9 Officer Lisa Koeppel has partnered with Capo, a two year-old male Belgian Malinois from Romania. Capo is fully certified in police patrol techniques and narcotic detection. K9 Officer Chad Wellman's partner is Ruger, a two year-old German Shepard who is from Slovakia. Ruger is also certified in full patrol techniques as well as narcotic detection.

The dogs will be formally commissioned as Cheyenne Police Service Dogs on Thursday June 14th, at 3:00 pm. Chief Brian Kozak will present collar badges to the K9s, signifying their dedication to their handlers, the Police Department and the City of Cheyenne.

The ceremony will be conducted in the grassy area adjacent to the Lions Park Amphitheater with a brief reception to follow.
