Cheyenne-Based Guard Unit to Deploy to Afghanistan
Over 30 soldiers with the Wyoming Army National Guard's Detachment 3, B Company, 777th Aviation Support Battalion, will deploy to Afghanistan on Friday.
"The unit is a helicopter maintenance unit that will go over to Afghanistan and provide maintenance for all of the aviation assets in that country," said Wyoming Military Department Spokeswoman Deidre Forster.
"This unit has been deployed once before to Kosovo in 2011, where they spent a year doing a peacekeeping mission," added Forster.
A deployment ceremony will be held Friday at 3:30 p.m. at the Wyoming Military Department's Joint Forces Readiness Center in Cheyenne.
"After they leave Cheyenne they'll go to Fort Hood for additional pre-deployment training before they head overseas," said Forster. "Their mission can last up to a year, but we anticipate them home before that."
