CASPER, Wyo. (AP) — The Uranium mining company Cameco Corp. is cutting 85 jobs in Wyoming and Nebraska.

The company, based in Canada, announced Thursday that the move was in response to low prices, which have been depressed since the disaster at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant in Japan in 2011.

The company operates the Smith Ranch-Highland mine near Glenrock and the North Butte mine south of Gillette. The company also has an office in Casper and operates the Crow Butte mine in Crawford, Nebraska.

The layoffs are part of a larger cost-cutting undertaking at the company, which is also suspending production at its operation in northern Saskatchewan, where 500 jobs will be eliminated.
