The Cheyenne Board of Public Utilities says they've received numerous calls about dirty water.  BOPU spokesman Clint Bassett says a water main break near Cosgriff Court over the weekend and crews replacing two water main valves at West 20th Street and Bent Ave, is to blame. Bassett says the two events changed how water flows through the mains. The changing flows stirred up sediment and corrosion; resulting in discolored water. Bassett says despite the discoloration,  the water is still safe.

He says if your water looks dirty, they suggest running cold water from a hose or faucet for up to 15 minutes. If that doesn't work, call BOPU at 637-6471. Bassett says avoid using hot water or doing laundry while the water is discolored. This will prevent sediment or minerals from being drawn into water heaters or onto clothes.

Bassett says the agency started annual hydrant flushing on Tuesday. Normally, the crews flush hydrants beginning the first week of May. Hydrant flushing is a coordinated, strategic release of water from fire hydrants. The high-velocity flows from the hydrants scour and scrub water mains. This removes sediment, corrosion and improves water quality.
