With an eye on bowl eligibility, the Wyoming Cowboys vie for their fourth consecutive victory at New Mexico Saturday in Albuquerque.

Wyoming (5-6, 3-4) has rallied after four straight losses with wins over Colorado State, San Jose State, and last week’s miraculous comeback over Air Force. While a victory doesn’t guarantee a bowl game for the Cowboys, it does keep them in the conversation.

The Mountain West Conference has five bowl game tie-ins, while there are presently six teams that have achieved bowl eligibility. A win by UW would make that seven. Fans of the Pokes would be hoping that some conferences don’t fill all their bowl game slots.

Wyoming head coach Craig Bohl spoke a lot about playing in meaningful games in November during his weekly press conference back on Monday. Bohl recapped his team’s unbelievable win over the Falcons, previewed a ‘better than their record’ Lobos squad, talked injuries, and much more in the video above.

New Mexico (3-8, 1-6) is guided by Sherriron Jones at quarterback, but Coltin Gerhart has also played this season. Jones has thrown for 1,414 yards with 13 touchdowns and 12 interceptions. Tyrone Owens is their leading ground gainer at 60.8 yards per game with six TD’s. The top targets are Delane Hart-Johnson and Elijah Lilly, who average 15.4 and 17.9 yards per catch, respectively. Their top defenders are safety Stanley Barnwell with 68 tackles, and Sitivena Tamaivena with 58 tackles.

With no Sean Chambers, out due to a season-ending injury, Tyler Vander Waal will lead the Cowboys offense versus the Lobos. The reigning MW Offensive Player of the Week led UW to 21 points in the fourth quarter last Saturday in the victory over Air Force. Star running back Nico Evans and freshman Jevon Bigelow are questionable with injuries, which means the load may fall on redshirt freshman Xazavian Valladay.

On the other side of the ball, senior Andrew Wingard is only five tackles away from the MW record for career tackles. He’s also just 18 tackles behind the school record. Wingard has 449 career stops. The Wyoming defense faces a New Mexico offense that likes to generate big plays.

The Lobos average 352.5 yards and 28.7 points per game. They give up 479 yards and 36.6 points per game.

The Pokes are at 323.8 yards and 19.7 points per game. They’ve averaged 396.5 yards and 27.3 points per game over the last four. UW allows 348.3 yards and 23.7 points per game.

This game marks the 71 in the series, which is the fourth-longest series in school history. Wyoming leads 37-33 all-time but has lost their last two in Albuquerque. Coach Bohl has yet to win there. The last Cowboys victory at New Mexico was in 2012, 28-23.

Kick-off is at 12:30 p.m. You can listen to the game on KOWB (AM 1290) with coverage at 11:30 a.m. Cowboy Talk will follow the broadcast. You can watch the game on AT&T SportsNet.
