Freedom Caucus Stalwart Loses Albany County Race, O’Doherty Leads Ward 3 Vote

The Wyoming Freedom Caucus had a bad night in Wyoming's Primary Election on Tuesday, and an Albany County Legislative race was no different.

House District 46 Republican Rep. Ocean Andrew had represented Albany County in the Wyoming House since 2021. But he fell to U.W. Professor Cameron Wright in the GOP Primary, 1,255 votes to 808.

That was part of a trend of Freedom Caucus members losing legislative races in Tuesday's primary, with 13 or 14 incumbents who were either Freedom Caucus members or allies losing re-election bids. Another high-profile member, House Speaker Chip Nieman, lost in his attempt to unseat Sen. Ogden Driskill [R-Devils Tower].

Incumbent O'Doherty Advances In Ward 3 Council Race

In other notable local results, in the Ward 3 City Council race, Incumbent Erin O'Doherty advanced to the November General Election as the top vote-getter with 1,141 votes. But because there are two open seats in the Ward and the top two finishers for each seat advance, all four candidates-- O'Doherty as well as Tammy Hooper, Brett Ralston and Samuel Buckwalter--will advance to November.

Under Wyoming law, city council races are non-partisan, meaning candidates don't affiliate with a party, and primary voters are not required to be members of a political party to cast ballots in council races.

For the Albany County Sheriff, both incumbent Democrat Aaron Applehans and Republican Daron Wyatt were unopposed in their respective party primaries. They will meet in the November General Election.
