Albany County Sheriff Aaron Applehans has announced that he is running for another term.

Applehans, who is a Democrat, was appointed sheriff by the Albany County Commission in December of 2020, replacing former Sheriff Dave O'Malley. Applehans had previously served as a Patrol Sergeant for the University of Wyoming Police Force.

His appointment made him the first-ever Black sheriff in Wyoming History. In 2022 he narrowly was elected to his own full term as sheriff, defeating Republican Joel Senior by a margin of roughly 52-48 percent.

Last week Applehans revived his 2022 campaign Facebook page to announce he will be running for another term in 2026

Applehans Says Much Has Been Accomplished, More To Be Done

His announcement included the following:

"Mental health support and de-escalation training have been implemented throughout my
office which has improved law enforcement interactions with residents in crisis. We’ve added two multi-
purpose canines to aid drug interdiction and search and rescue and have expanded our training options
(or requirements), available equipment, and expertise of our search and rescue deputies and volunteers.
Even though much has been accomplished, our work is not finished. I remain committed to ensuring
public safety by continuing to provide deputy training and equipment and being innovative in how we
serve the public."
Wyoming's period for candidates to officially file for office is May 14- May 26. The state primary election will be held on Aug. 18 and the General Election is Nov. 3.
