A pair of University of Wyoming athletes were honored with weekly Mountain West honors in track and field and golf this week.

Track and field star Ja’la Henderson was named the Mountain West Women’s Outdoor Field Athlete of the Week on Tuesday. She won the long jump in her first outdoor competition this season at the Jerry Quiller Classic in Boulder, CO last Saturday. It was her eighth victory in jumping events this season.

The junior had a top leap of 20 feet, 2.5 inches, which ranks second best all-time in school history. Henderson is only an inch-and-a-half off the school record of 20-4 set in 1980 by Patricia Miller. She is also one of only four women to surpass 20 feet in the long jump this year, ranks third in the NCAA and leads the MW with her mark.

This is the second weekly honor this season for Henderson. She was recognized during the indoor track season on Feb. 6.

Wyoming track and field returns to competition March 31.

Meanwhile, senior men’s golfer Drew McCullough was selected the MW Men’s Golfer of the Week Wednesday, as announced by the league office.

The senior led the Cowboys to their third tournament win during this 2017-18 season. Wyoming won the MacKenzie Match Play in California last week. McCullough went 3-0 as the top seed for the Pokes, who beat Sacramento State, the host San Francisco and Marquette.

McCullough earned the honor for the first time in his career.

The Cowboy golf team resumes action on the links March 29-31 in San Francisco.
