CHEYENNE, Wyo. (AP) — A proposed statewide lodging tax has cleared a Senate committee as it continues to make its way through the Wyoming Legislature.

The Senate Travel, Recreation, Wildlife and Cultural Resources Committee voted 3-1 Tuesday with one conflict declared to advance House Bill 66. The bill likely will be referred to the Appropriations Committee before it is considered by the full Senate.

Under the proposal, a 5 percent statewide lodging tax would be imposed with the state and counties sharing the estimated $32 million a year in new revenue. The state plans to use most of its share to fund tourism promotion and take the state tourism office budget off the volatile general fund.

Proponents say the proposal will help Wyoming compete with neighboring states that currently spend more on tourism promotion.
