Wyoming State Highway 70 Closed For Winter 2018-19 Season
The last of Wyoming's seasonal highways is no longer accessible to motor vehicle traffic until the middle of next year.
WYDOT has closed the gates, signifying the annual seasonal closure, on a 22 mile stretch of Wyoming State Highway 70, between Encampment and Baggs, for the winter 2018-19 season.
Too much snow, combined with too little traffic in the area, makes snow plowing efforts impractical.
The highway between mileposts 28 (28 miles east of Baggs) and 50 (or about 7 miles west of Encampment), reaches a height of nearly 10,000 feet above sea level, at Battle Pass, where the highway crosses over the Continental Divide.
Due to late snowmelt in the area during the spring, the highway normally doesn't reopen until around Memorial Day of next year.
