CHEYENNE, Wyo. (AP) — Gov. Matt Mead says it appears likely that state agencies won’t face more spending cuts in the two-year budget cycle that begins next year. Mead says he’s informed state lawmakers that state agencies won’t honor their request to present proposed spending cuts of up to 6 percent at legislative committee hearings this summer. The governor says state revenues are improving and that more cuts probably won’t be necessary.

CHEYENNE, Wyo. (AP) — Gov. Matt Mead has proclaimed April as “Child Abuse Prevention Month.” Mead signed a proclamation yesterday at the state Capitol in Cheyenne, urging everyone in the state to do their part to reduce child abuse and neglect. In his remarks, the governor said there were 718 cases of child abuse and neglect in the state in 2011 and the state can obviously do better.

FORT CARSON, Colo. (AP) — An Army sergeant at Fort Carson has received the U.S. military’s third-highest combat medal for intercepting one of two suicide bomber attacks in Afghanistan in August. Sgt. Andrew Mahoney, credited with saving 24 lives, received the Silver Star at a ceremony yesterday at Fort Carson, outside Colorado Springs. The other bomber killed three officers, including Sgt. Maj. Kevin J. Griffin of Laramie, Wyo.

LARAMIE, Wyo. (AP) — Jordan Stanton is leading the Wyoming defense in tackles this spring. In UW’s three spring scrimmages, Stanton has a team-best 21 tackles as a middle linebacker. Coach Dave Christensen tells the Wyoming Tribune Eagle that Stanton, a junior-college transfer from Los Angeles, needs to improve on handling the altitude but is making progress.
