CHEYENNE, Wyo. (AP) — Wyoming politicians say new federal rules to curtail venting and flaring of oil and gas wells on federal land duplicate state rules and aren't needed.

Flaring is the practice of burning off excess gas. Venting releases gas directly into the atmosphere, contributing to air pollution and global warming.

The U.S. Bureau of Land Management released new regulations for venting and flaring Tuesday. Wyoming Republicans promise to work on rolling back the rules.

Sen. John Barrasso says speeding up pipeline permitting would reduce flaring by reducing the amount of time flaring is necessary. Sen. Mike Enzi says he hopes the incoming Donald Trump administration will work with Congress to overturn the rule.

Gov. Matt Mead says the rule would require emissions reductions that are outside the BLM's jurisdiction to enforce.
