The Wyoming Highway Patrol is dealing with a shortage of troopers.

"There's a pretty dramatic shortage or number of vacancies in the patrol on the sworn side statewide," said Wyoming Department of Transportation Director John Cox. "There's a need for better recruitment and retention ability and better ability to keep people in the field on the job and that really goes for all of the divisions in the patrol not just the troopers in the field."

Cox says the challenge is really ongoing in nature.

"While we feel like we have a good handle on what the needs are going forward, it would also be accurate to say that in some ways the challenges that face any law enforcement agency are present in the WHP and they really don't necessarily change over time," said Cox.
