Were you planning to attend this Saturday's Ice Festival in downtown Cheyenne?

The State Parks Department has cancelled the Wyoming Kids eXtreme Ice Festival, scheduled for Saturday, February 28, at the Barrett Building, due to warmer weather.

The warmer temperatures we had been enjoying have taken their toll on the ice festival that is annually set up on the grounds of the Wyoming State Museum. The director of the Wyoming State Parks, Historic Sites and Trails Domenic Bravo says 'It is with heavy heart that we cancel this year’s Wyoming Kids eXtreme Ice Festival as it has been a major winter event for State Parks and for the downtown of Cheyenne for the last six years.'

Snow for the event is normally hauled in from the Snowy Range Ski Area west of Laramie, but this year the overnight lows have not stayed below 20 degrees, so the recreation area has not been able to make any artificial snow.

Also, with the warmer weather, the ground has not frozen yet so heavy equipment brought in to build the large snow features at the Ice Festival could damage the area. The agency looks forward to the possibility that the event will return next year and that the 7th Ice Festival will be bigger and better than ever.

Bravo thanks all of the volunteers, vendors, sponsors and staff who were ready to make the Ice Festival happen and looks forward to next year.
