The Executive Director of a group that lobbies for LGBTQ rights in Wyoming said Monday she is pleased with a U.S. Supreme Court ruling in the case of a Colorado baker who refused to make a wedding cake for a same-sex wedding.

Sara Burlingame of Wyoming Equality said that is because, while the high court ruled in favor of the baker (Jack Phillips) who refused to make the cake because of religious objections to gay marriage, it did so on very narrow grounds mostly related to hostility towards Phillips on the part of a state commission on civil rights.

Burlingame said what is more important in terms of LGBTQ rights is the fact the high court left in place the concept of laws protecting LGBTQ people from discrimination.

Burlingame said that fact should help pave the way for both a Cheyenne non-discrimination ordinance as well as a state law specifically protecting LGBTQ people from discrimination in employment, housing, and public accommodations.

Burlingame is herself a Democratic candidate for House District 44 in the state legislature in the August 21 primary election.

But she says regardless of whether she is elected, she thinks a non-discrimination bill will be put forward in the 2019 Wyoming Legislature.
