Josh Allen threw for 328 yards and two touchdowns, and the Wyoming Cowboys got their first shutout since 2010 in a 27-0 victory over Gardner-Webb Saturday in Laramie.
Wyoming (1-1) scored on its first two drives and led 24-0 by halftime. The defense allowed only 195 total yards and posted a shutout for the first time since the Pokes beat CSU 44-0 in the final game of the 2010 season.
Kellen Overstreet capped the game’s opening drive with a 1-yard TD run. On the second drive, Allen found Austin Conway in the left flat, who took 27-yards for a score and 14-0 lead.
A 47-yard Allen pass to C.J. Johnson set up the third score, which was Cooper Rothe’s 28-yard field goal.
Conway returned a punt 45 yards that set up the fourth scoring drive of the first half. Allen found Johnson wide open over the middle for a 29-yard TD pass.
Gardner-Webb (0-2) controlled the third quarter with an 18-play drive and held the ball nearly 12 minutes. UW’s defense forced an incomplete pass on fourth down.
After an Andrew Wingard interception, the Cowboys completed the scoring with a Rothe 29-yard field goal.
Allen finished 22-32 and connected with five different receivers. Conway had 11 catches for 135 yards, while Johnson added six grabs for 130 yards. Wyoming had just 65 yards on the ground. Overstreet’s 33 yards rushing were the most.
UW head coach Craig Bohl was happy to get the win, but not pleased with their ground attack. He also mentioned adjusting to Allen’s special talent and ability with his arm.
