The University of Wyoming football team held their first official practice in Laramie on Monday, August 6th. The typical excitement of the start of a new season was very evident among the 103 players, which represented a depth UW football has not had before under fourth-year head coach Dave Christensen.

“I’m excited about this team. I think it will be the most athletic team and deepest team we’ve had since we’ve been here,” said Christensen following the helmets only practice. “But as many know, we’ve played 42 freshmen here over the past three years. We’ll play the guys who are ready to play. I think we finally will be able to enjoy some really good depth this season, which is something we’ve worked hard at building during our time here.”

One of the giddiest guys on the field was sophomore quarterback Brett Smith, who said he’s playing at 100 percent for the first time in a long. Smith also said he’s put on about 15 pounds since the New Mexico Bowl and is relishing the chance to work with his long line of receivers and develop the chemistry they’ll need to be successful this season.

While the coaching staff gave no indications on who might be starting, they did release that place-kicker Daniel Sullivan will likely miss the season as he deals with a medical condition. Christensen said he expects the sophomore to redshirt this season, making sophomore Stuart Williams the most experienced place-kicker on the team.

Also announced on Monday was the departure of sophomore Daniel Fleischman, who recently suffered a season-ending injury and decided to leave the team. Fleischman was the project starter at right tackle following spring drills. Christensen reported that Kyle Magnuson has been moved into the spot and didn’t seem concerned about the loss because of the depth they have available at that position.

Fall camp continues for the Pokes with another helmets only practice on Tuesday morning. They will be practicing on the North Forty Practice Field through training camp. Their first scrimmage is slated for Saturday, Aug. 11 at 3:45 pM in War Memorial Stadium. Check 0ut photos from day one of fall camp below.
