To highlight the importance of preventing falls on the job site, JE Dunn, the construction manager for the Wyoming Capitol Square Project, held a free safety training in Cheyenne today.

"We're bringing awareness to the subcontractors and the JE Dunn individuals of how to prepare yourself and be ready so that your equipment is in good working order and that you're tied off properly," said Justin McFadden, Senior Project Manager with JE Dunn.

Falls continue to be a leading cause of death for construction workers, accounting for 24 fatalities in Wyoming between 2008 and 2014 (Bureau of Labor Statistics).

But McFadden says those deaths are preventable.

"Everything on a construction job site, in particular the fall protection, is preventable," said McFadden. "It depends on how you prepare for those situations where you're going to be at and making sure that the hazards are mitigated."

"There's nothing worse than having somebody on your job site fall and lose their life," added McFadden. "So it's important that you're tied off properly so that if that fall does happen that equipment is going to protect you."
