We're all looking for that day when we clock out for the last time. When that is depends on us. But what states in this country are the best places to hang our hat for retirement?  Bankrate.com did a survey of all the states based on economics, cost of living, crime, weather and over-all well being. Here are the top 5 states to retire in.

  1. Wyoming - The Cowboy State checks in at #1 according to the study. Besides all the other great qualities of the state, low tax rate ranked #1.
  2. Colorado - Our neighbors to the south check in at #2 in the nation of best places to retire. The mild winters allow retirees to enjoy biking, mountain trails and parks throughout the year.
  3. Utah - It has been said that about 4 in 10 Americans desire to have access to outdoor activities, with mountains and rivers and Utah has all of that.
  4. Idaho - This state has the lowest cost of living and crime rate! These are two things that make this state attractive to retirees.
  5. Virginia - This is labeled as one of the safest places in the country to live. If you're looking for affordable coastal life styles, Virgina may be a place to look at. According to research, 25% of retirees like to be near a beach.
