On behalf of Sweetwater County Fire Warden Mike Bournazian, the Sweetwater County Sheriff’s Office issued an update on the Bitter Creek wildfire south of Rock Springs at about 4:00 PM on Tuesday.

About 100 BLM and local firefighters continue to fight the blaze, which has now covered about 2,400 acres. The rate of the fire’s increase has been reduced substantially, and officials hope to dramatically increase its containment by tonight.

One helicopter was up as part of the firefighting effort today, and an additional fixed-wing aircraft was used earlier in the day to coordinate suppression operations on the ground.

“We hope to turn the corner today, and to significantly increase containment by tonight,” Bournazian said.
