Who do you think will win the 2014 Kentucky Derby?

The 140th Kentucky Derby will be run Saturday afternoon, May 3, at Churchill Downs in Louisville and our family will be gathered around the TV watching to see if we can pick the winner.

The current favorite is California Chrome at 5-2 odds owned by Steve and Carolyn Coburn and Perry and Denise Martin. Wicked Strong lives up to his name at 6-1, he’s owned by Centennial Farms. I’m picking California Chrome to win followed by Wicked Strong and Dance With Fate.

The black thoroughbred is owned by S. Alesia, Bran Jan Stable & Ciaglia Racing, LLC.

Each year we try to pick who will win, mostly by watching the horses getting ready for the race, or who the jockey, trainer and owners are or just by what colors the jockeys are wearing and the name of the horse.

Hoppertunity, was of the most fun names this year but has been scratched due to a foot problem.

With the scratch of Hoppertunity, Mike Battaglia revised the morning line for Derby 140. The revised line from the rail out is as follows: Vicar’s in Trouble (20-1), Harry’s Holiday (50-1), Uncle Sigh (30-1), Danza (8-1), California Chrome (5-2), Samraat (15-1), We Miss Artie (50-1), General a Rod (15-1), Vinceremos (30-1), Wildcat Red (15-1), Dance With Fate (20-1), Chitu (20-1), Medal Count (20-1), Tapiture (12-1), Intense Holiday (8-1), Commanding Curve (50-1), Candy Boy (15-1), Ride On Curlin (15-1), Wicked Strong (6-1) and Pablo Del Monte (50-1).

Some people love the pageantry of the Kentucky Derby with the ladies wearing spectacular hats. Others enjoy the libations with pitchers of Mint Juleps. Which reminds me, our Rockin’ Redhead Teri Landreth will probably be sporting a hat with a drink in her hand Saturday at the Outlaw’s Jockey’s & Julep’s starting at 11 a.m. Stop in and join us.

The field of 20 horses will compete for $2 million in prize money so a lot is on the line in America’s most famous horse race on Saturday. One thing’s for sure each year, the Kentucky Derby always lives up to it’s claim of being ‘the most exciting two minutes in sports.’
