Today is December 21, 2015, also known as Yalda. Although many of us may not refer to it as Yalda in America. So what exactly is Yalda all about? Let's take a look and explore.

Yalda is basically a tradition of the country of Iran. It is commonly known as a celebration of the arrival of winter and a farewell, of sorts, to fall.

Don't plan on going to bed early if you're planning to celebrate Yalda either, as it is traditionally an "all-nighter." The family get together at the eldest members home and enjoy food like watermelon, dried nuts and pomegranates.

At Yalda, old poems and mythologies are read and sometimes songs are sung. There was a great Persian poet by the name of Shamsu Ud-Din Mohammad Hafez-e Shirazi, and they read out of his book thus receiving their "Hafez reading" on that night, which seems to be a big deal.

But here in America, I think I'll just recognize it as the shortest day of the year and leave it at that. I can promise you, that I will not be staying up all night eating watermelon. I'll probably hit the sack around 9 p.m.
