If you want to see your trees and fruit trees grow better, there are actions that you can take to help them thrive faster and better in the long run.  Grass is a very aggressive competitor to the good growth of trees. One great way to get more water to the root system of your tree is to remove the grass from the trunk area.

Some experts recommend cutting the grass from the base of the tree in a circumference that does not exceed the branches. This will allow for the trunk of the tree to gain full water that it needs without being hampered by grass and weeds.

If you decide to go with a soaker hose, make sure you wrap around the base of the tree and lay mulch on top of it. This will help to hold the hose in place and keep the direct sunlight from easily evaporating the water too fast. This will also help to properly regulate water saturation in your soil.

If you do go with the mulch, ensure that you keep the bark from touching the base of the tree as this can cause rotting at the base of the tree trunk over time. If done correctly, the mulch will decompose over time, adding a nice organic substance to the soil.
