Technical instrument company FEI on Friday announced it will provide imaging equipment, software and support worth $12 million to the University of Wyoming for cutting-edge digital rock research to benefit the oil and gas industry.

Because of the Wyoming Legislature's state matching program, the total value of the donation will add up to $24 million. Governor Matt Mead says the donation will "push the bounds of knowledge" about oil and gas reservoirs. The donation will create a new Center for Flow in Porous Media, which will research ways to improve recovery of oil and  natural gas from reservoirs.

The Governor on Friday said the research is so cutting-edge that in many cases the University of Wyoming will be the only institution anywhere in the world conducting it.

Besides oil and gas recovery the research will look at how to best store damaging liquids over long periods of time.
